WHAT WE'VE ACHIEVED
Became the leading organization in the District of Columbia on the issue of rent “concessions,” an effort by large landlords like Equity Residential to circumvent DC’s strong rent stabilization law.
Inspired an article in The City Paper that broke the rent "concessions" story.
Helped pass a law through the DC City Council that put an end to the practice citywide, saving renters hundreds of thousands of dollars or more.
Sparked an investigation by the DC Attorney General into false advertising by Equity Residential, which resulted in a Superior Court judge ordering that Equity pay approximately $1 million in restitution.
Helped stop Equity Residential from spewing concrete dust into resident apartments during its repair of balconies. Provided extensive video to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and to the DC Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA), prompting an investigation and fines.
Reported Equity Residential to DCRA for multiple violations of the housing code after a dog was electrocuted on the sidewalk along the South building of 3003 Van Ness. This led to an investigation by DCRA and fines against Equity.
